Blizzard has commented, noting that they will aim to have it fixed tomorrow.

To compensate for the loss of time by not having the event start at the right time, this month's darkmoon faire will begin at midnight on sunday, january 9th, instead of the usual midnight on the first sunday of the month. Darkmoon faire is supposed to start today (january 2) on live servers as it usually does on the first sunday of a month. When the faire is happening, they are there the day before it opens. Since february, the darkmoon faire has made a comeback to classic wow.
